Any other ideas?
Will appreciate any sort of advice!

As well as being plugged in physically, and network enabled, it expects to find something working on the other end, too. Mine says this if I switch off my modem.
if your laptop is newer than your desktop computer then its got the ability to use straight through and cross-over interchangeably.
network cable management
Whats connected to the other side of the cable?

Router? Modem?
it may be plugged in but maybe its loose such as a wire that inside the main cable. Or maybe the slot where it goes in is missing a lil piece or theres something there? Check to see if something is missing or twisted etc
Right Click LAN connection and enable it if it's not enabled.
