I've had very good luck with Microsoft Security Essentials. I used AVG for a long time, but the MSE program seems to catch viruses just as if not more effectively and doesn't annoy you every five minutes.
Avast is the best among the Free AV products....you must be doing something wrong ...or just had a bad download....


Avira free + comodo Firbest antivirus download freeewall free will be a good option.
My personal choice.
I use AVG on all my computers. I am also an IT tech and clean and fix computers for a living. I use AVG to clean all the computers i work on.
For example I use Avast but my ISP gave me Key and I don't think it isn't good anti virus.
I have been very happy with AVG and Microsoft Security Essentials seems to do a good job as well
