java openoffice downloadWhat is the difference between OpenOffice and microsoft word? cons and pros?

I need microsoft word to open the .doc and .docx formats of my university files on my laptop, however I can't afford $100 and more for buying the microsoft office. Someone told me to download Openoffice from java's website, and told that it's pretty much the same. Is this gonna help me out? Are there any disadvantages?
OpenOffice.org is better than Microsoft Office in some ways and worse in others. I think when everything if factored in, except for cost, Microsoft Office would be the leader, but not be a great amount.

When you save in Microsoft format in OpenOffice, the results are not always “exactly” the same. If you need identical results, you should download Microsft's free office viewers and use them for proofing. Note that I don't know of any word processor that, when you save in the format of another word processor, won’t sometimes produce slightly different formatting.

But normally your professors won't know the difference and they shouldn’t care.

Remembjava openoffice downloader, OpenOffice.org is free, so you don’t lose anything financially by giving it a try.

The best download site is , not “java’s website”, though I believe they have a link there, since Sun Microsystems is responsible for both products.

Be sure to check the documentation at and . OpenOffice.org is not a clone of Microsoft Office and is not intended to be a clone of Microsoft Office. It does some things very differently, on purpose. Be warned. Don’t assume that because you can't get OpenOffice.org to do exactly what you want on your first attempts, that it can't do it. It has its own logic.

In particular, you are likely to have problems if you don’t use styles.

But I’vd been using OpenOffice.org both a home and at work since vesion 1.1, and at work we’ve found it a very useful substitute for Microsoft Office, once we had our external programs rewritten to use OpenOffice.org instead of Microsoft Office.
